Mobile/Web OTT

streaming app

Mobile app that allows you to watch Live TV, recordings and OnDemand from your phone, tablet or computer.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
Mobile design has its own challenge due to limited screen space and using transitions and swiping gestures effectively. While staying consistent throughout platforms and having to create a design system to work in a responsive environment, I added a modern touch by redesigning the UI and adding a seamless browsing experience. I brought important features upfront, while working around limitations and eliminated extra steps for the user to take action. The accomplishment was to not only retain customers, but to gain customers.

Role:
Lead Product Designer. Start to Finish.

Tools:
Sketch. InVision. Photoshop. Adobe XD.

Platform:

Fire TV/ Android app

The DISH FireTV app displays content that bridges the gap between the traditional TV viewing and the mobile online experience, providing the user with a fresh look that adds familiarity in the 10 foot experience.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
Working through the limitations of having a remote control with limited buttons and colors that looked blown out going from computer to TV format, I resolved the pain points that the previous app faced with its functionality and appearance. By providing upgraded, modern UI, straight forward enhancements, and familiar, easy-to-use navigation, I was able to enhance the user experience entirely and create a great end product that would boost the use of the app and retain customers.

Role:
Lead Product Designer. Start to Finish.

Tools:
Sketch. InVision. Freehand. Photoshop.

Interactive Sims

Through various interactive simulations, support technicians are able to gain the knowledge and understanding to help clients with printing issues. These exercises demonstrate how print processes and print components work together.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
Working closely with tech writers, storyboards and manuals, I developed the UI, as well as illustrated, animated and coded simulations, both interactive and self playing. The challenge was learning how each product worked internally and representing that in an animated/interactive way that would be seen as educational and necessary for the technician to help clients.

Animator. Illustrator. Multimedia Developer. Researcher.

OTC /SPX

Interactive Training tools

With a growing need to stay on top of technology in the automotive aftermarket, a need for instructional use on the latest OTC devices was necessary.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
In order to give the user a similar hands-on experience of how these tools are used in the automotive aftermarket industry, I worked with instructional designers, and used real life devices to create realistic animated simulations and interactions that train mechanics on OTC devices. Effective training was necessary to help promote sales in the automotive industry.

Role:
Illustrator. Animator. ActionScript coder.

Tools:
Adobe Creative Suite (Animate)

Nest Cameras -

Integration with TV

Camera systems, can now be integrated with television, displaying live streams from your camera devices on your TV.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
Creating a flow of easy-to-understand messaging that directs the user to informative errors, alerts or issues that may occur during the streaming of live footage. The screens were detailed to teach the user/s how the cameras worked with multiple users in the household. The process is straight forward, but the verbiage was specifically detailed to notify users carefully of any issues.

Role:
Product Designer.

Tools:
Sketch. InVision. Photoshop.

Bracket View -

Sports Betting

With online betting becoming legal across many states, the task was to try out the Bracket View app during March Madness on the website.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
The challenge of this project, although looks simple, was quite complex. From the user choosing their brackets, the process of points collected per winning game, and how to display winning and losing teams, this involved a lot of testing and redesign. I worked closely with both Developers and QA Analysts to get the user experience to work flawlessly with no errors so the Leaderboard would represent accurate and immediate results.

Mobile app

Design Challenge

The design challenge was to construct a portion of a mobile “dog walking” app that focused on the customer who needed a dog walker.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
The challenge of this project was to design high fidelity mocks/flow as if I was the customer who needed to hire a dog walker. With limited time constraints, and the mission to keep the process simple and clean, I created a user friendly app that offered all aspects of finding the perfect dog walker for the customer’s pet(s).

Rosetta Stone -

Self-running animation

Rosetta Stone is a technology software company that provides language lessons using images, text and sound. However, they needed assistance in educating people on language barriers and how it can impact communication in the workplace, school, and retail environments.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
The challenge of this project was to utilize simplistic graphics and work with a very limited color palette to make a visually appealing, self-running educational course. The animation was timed to sync with narrated audio and contain relevant images to visually tell a story while motion was used to add interest and transitions.

Login Profiles

Profiles are a huge asset in the TV watching world. Having a profile set up for each individual, allows them to have personalized content geared toward their viewing habits.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
Currently the client’s Fire TV app has no profiles set up for this 10 foot experience, unlike the mobile app, that does have them. This was a fun project as the challenge was to set up a simple profile flow, while illustrating unique, fun icons that would appeal to people.

Guide Promotional

Banners

Seen by several viewers, these promotional banners are placed at the bottom of the program guide to promote Sporting Events, On Demand Content, Channels, and other promotions.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
The design challenge is based on the limited amount of real estate they are presented in. Taking high resolution poster art, that often is in a vertical format, and arranging it in the small horizontal format of a 1280px x 83px dimension. The impact of these banners has proven to be very successful and result in million views of the content.

Role:
Lead Visual Designer.

Tools:
Sketch. Photoshop.

Promotional Ads

These promotional ads are geared to increase revenue and customer awareness of products, apps, and other promotional or marketing material.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
Having limited real estate to work with design layout and providing content specific text that carries out the marketing message. The ads help generate the use of apps and features across all DISH platforms.

Role:
Lead Visual Designer.

Tools:
Sketch. Photoshop.

404 Error Pages

404 Error pages often lack personality leaving users confused or uninformed.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
I loved this project! My job was to improve messaging and add some humor and fun to the error (Page Not Found) pages to reduce user frustration. The intention was to have rotating messaging, so the user would not always see the same messaging and to provide candid visuals to help ease the users experience.

Training Courses

& Interfaces

I worked several years building eLearning/training courses for a number different industries.

Challenges and Accomplishments:
My job involved all multimedia development from beginning to end of project. I designed menu systems and interfaces from top to bottom. I worked closely with tech writers and built out simulations, scenarios and learning exercises. I made sure the entire course functioned properly and that all buttons and links worked as they should. Each interface had to have a visual appeal as well as an effective way to navigate through the courses.

Design System

The DSM tool is a critical part of design and development to maintain consistency throughout platforms.

Challenges and Accomplishments: :
When I started at DISH, the DSM tool was populated with several components, icons, and fonts. However, I came in as a designer that focused on web, mobile and TV apps. The collection of what existed in our DSM did not carry over from standard TV to mobile platforms cohesively. I collaborated with other designers, marketing and development teams to create a more robust design system. This new design system worked across all platforms to maintain a consistent feel with highly reusable elements and a fresh, new color palette for our evolving products.
